I read that this morning and the same is true for Lithium and Nickel mining but these tree huggers don't care, they are obssessed with Co2 reduction at the expense of all else, it is an almost "the end justifies the means" communist way of looking at it. The next nightmare will be what to do with the billions of tonnes of waste batteries we will be swamped with in around the next two decades.

The battery isssue is already a reality, I know of loads of Prius minicab's in Leicester that run full time on the engine as the batteries are knackered and just log the weight around, basically get less mpg than cars 15 years older

I can only give you a few VAG examples as all the other cars on my general trade parts system are all POA as they do not want you to know. On a Golf E the full battery is £11835 plus installation or if you think you know which one of the 27 units it is that is faulty you can replace the units at an average of £358 each, plus the substantial labour for removing, dismantling and reinstalling the pack. The main power control unit (these do fail) is around £3300, personally I think the whole concept of pure electric cars is insane, plot lost big time! The only people who like the idea are nutty tree huggers or people who think they will have to spend less on fuel.

Unfortunately it brings with it some problems, for one the NOX levels are higher and secondly it makes a petrol engine put out PM2.5 matter which is lethal stuff. This is why we will soon have the Gasoline Particulate Filter. We have just taken our first Golf 7 TDI DPF off due to it being 42% restricted, God it is a huge lump with the CAT and EGR attached and takes about four hours to get off, subframe out!
