This set of winter tyres and wheels came with my A6 Allroad when I bought it a couple of months ago. Now I want to get them cleaned up but as you can see there's a lot of crap on them.

I don't have any special cleaning products here, just household stuff. I was thinking of a hose down and scrub wth washing up liquid and stiff brush to begin with, then rinse and wipe diluted vinegar around the insides then sponge off with more splashing up liquid and water, then maybe rinse and repeat before some metal polish like autosol to finish.

Does that sound like a sound plan or can anyone with experience of tackling grotty wheels like this give me advice on a better approach? I've never really cleaned up wheels in this kind of state before, so very open to learning! Thanks

What I thought was just salty road crud turns out to be the paint flaking off. Detailed pic attached. I guess this is a sand, fill and paint job now?!

Would it be easier to get them shot blasted and powder coated? That will get all the grot out of them and give a durable finish.

Yes maybe. I'm coming to the conclusion I need to find a specialist to refurb them as it might be a bit beyond my DIY efforts.

Most powder coaters will charge between 40-60 per wheel for a standard silver application. I had some motor cycle wheels done in gloss black several years ago a d they looked great. Durable too.

The laqcuer and paint is blistered and flaking, really the only way to get them looking smart is blast and powder coat. I got my current 13 year old passat wheels done at a powder coating workshop for 50 quid each a few years ago, they still look like new. I've also done vw alloys with wet n dry and Wurth silver wheel paint and laqcuer but it is a pita and takes ages to do it well. I've got a set of winter alloys in the shed that are as scabby as yours, so much so, one of the tyre beads is leaking under the scabby paint.

Thanks for the advice guys. Does powder coat paint need a lacquer coat on top, or is the powder coat paint itself sufficient to withstand prolonged use / cleaning / road grit, etc?

No the powder coat is baked on so is very durable. Maybe a good idea to polish inner and outer with a good quality wheel wax to give extra protection. Good luck with it and post some pics when done.

As said above, the coating is durable, one point to note is the coating covers all the wheel and you may need to rub it down out of the central hub mounting spigot bore with a flapper wheel as it will likely be too tight to fit on the hub or make it difficult to get the wheels back off the hub. Mine were!
