The battery light will flash 3 times when i accelerate medium to hard and then the engine will judder slightly. Runs smooth when i drive like a grandad. Other symptom is a clunky squeaky noise on start up and when setting off at low revs.

I have a few theories that the belt is slipping or one or more pulleys are fudged. My aircon doesnt work so it could be the pump is starting to seize, or it could be the bloody alternator clutch pulley thats had it.

Anyone experience similar issues and can shed light? Im planning to change the aux belt and tensioner anyway, also sourced a decent 2nd hand alternator too.

    Thanks in advance

Sounds like the one way clutch pulley on your alternator has given up.

You don't say if it's petrol or diesel, if diesel you can just remove the aircon belt if you have no intention of repairing the system. Not sure about a petrol.
I've had to replace a few clutch pulleys on alternators, you need the special tool though.

Sorry rob, i have the petrol 1.8t bex. The aircon hasnt worked since i got the car over 2 years ago. Finally seen a decent replacement on ebay so ill be doing that too. Ive spoken to a garage near me and they can remove my damaged pulley if needed but i need to take my alternator to them, no hard job as its been off a few times.

Trying to get a hold of a genuine pulley from tps, dont fancy a cheap one just for it to go again.

Managed to get dirty today. The alt clutch pulley is seized. Doesnt rotate either way when stopping the blades/arms inside the alternator with a screwdriver.

Plus ive figured out why the aircon doesnt work...the pump pulley looks like a bombs gone off inside. Theres an opening on the side of the pulley and you can see inside slightly. All i can see and hear is fragments of metal and rumbling. Think ill be putting orders in for a recon alternator and aircon pump.
