    Hi
i have a flashing amber glow plug light and the fault code is P246E
bqnk 1 exhaust gas temperature sensor 4 intermittent electrical fault

does this mean the sensor is faulty or could it be a electrical connection problem?
I take it it's the furthest sensor from the turbo under neath the car ?
is it prone to problems and do ecp etc sell this sensor ? Also is the connector for it underneath or on the bulkhead like the rest ?
    Many thanks

This one will be connected underneath the car clipped to the side of the under chassis. They are around £115 to £130 from the dealer but I have found them for £70 odd at a European car parts retailer (Auto Doc). Often the same part is cheaper at Skoda or Seat dealers.

I priced it from TPS and it's around £130.

Can they get sooted up? I had the dreaded P2015 inlet manifold flap problem but that's now fixed. The dpf hasn't regened for a while so possibly the probe isn't reading right ?

They can get sooted up under extreme conditions but it's rare. They have a precious metal core surrounded by a tubular cage and cleaning them is tricky as moisture is their enemy. A failed sensor or intermittent fault will stop regeneration as long as the car holds a fault for it.

Be very gentle removing it, I have had a lot seize in their threads due to stainless steel galling and they snap before they will come out and when they start to gall, they won't tighten back down, catch 22. Drilling out the high grade stainless they are made from is not easy and means removing the DPF.

I have the same on a VW Caddy 2012 1.6. Amber flashing coil, then EML, then DPF, then limp. I also have P2463 and I assume that was due to the sensor failing and having to drive it home (it happened 30miles after leaving auction house last week!)

Local Indy VW garage has this to replace - said they tested it was failure rather than ground or wiring. Have approval from auction house to cover costs

Question I had was do these sensors just fail, or slowly go out of range, then fail? It just seems so odd to pick it up from auction and 30miles later it fails on me. An unlucky day I guess!

Just coincidental - like when the in tank fuel pump fails when you're replacing the timing belt or just after. This frequently happens on a scheduled 2nd belt change at higher mileage - must be a similar end of life moment for the little 12v DC motors inside.

Unlucky? At least the auction house is covering the costs!

HI there, I'm new to the site, I have a 2010 Audi A5 Sportback 3.0TDi Quattro Auto, 60k miles, its got the same fault as your thread, engine light on and the following fault code, P246F00 & P246E00 Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 4 Range / Performance. See attached picture.

My question is what is the part number for this sensor and where is it located on the exhaust, I believe I can get it from Euro parts etc, is it easy to access etc, I have it booked in with my mechanic friend next Tuesday.

    Many thanks Mark

Before replacing the faulty sensor I worry that you should get the code properly identified using VAG group specific equipment as generic tools can miss identify some codes causing the wrong actions to be taken.
