A3 2.0 TFSi Engine Management Emissions Control Light / Timing Chain Replacement

Hi All,

Audi A3 - 2TFSi 200 RJ58 *** 83,000 miles.

Help/ideas very welcome as in for a big, and potentially unnecessary bill.

Diagnostics are saying crank and cam shaft position sensor, but both have been replaced by local garage as light is still on. They took a closer look today and have suggested that the timing chain needs replacing as it is loose. They lifted the cover off the side of the engine and there was a bit of movement when pushed with a screw driver.

The garage is quoting £1k for parts and labour, and saying they may need to open up the engine to check the valves and replace the head if they do this. Seems excessive. Is it possible the a new chain and kit will fix the management sensor issue? The lambda sensor has not been checked yet and was thinking that might be sensible before?

Car used to start fine, and since the light came on it turns over, but only after 2+ seconds instead of immediate. I only do 4k miles per annum. Not sure how a loose chain would affect the turnover. I've driven car when light is on and drives fine (apart from the slowish turnover).

The timing needs to be checked correctly .Not with a screwdriver! This could be the issue as if timing is slightly out it would show as your fault.
