The (not so) wonderful original Monroe electronic rear shocks on my 2009 TSI have failed and replacements are over £200 each.

Has anybody fitted lower cost, non-electric shocks, to a 2.0 TSI, instead of the expensive original ones and turned off the electronic suspension using Vagcom?

If so, please post the shock make & part number so I can replace the useless originals.

    The car's details are:

Model: PASSAT GT TSI / 1984 CC / Year: 2009
    Variant: AACAWBX0
    Version: FM6FM62Q011ST0GG
    VIN: WVWZZZ3CZZ9E543165

    Thanks

You'd better off asking a us cc forum as this one seems to be lacking in cc members.

Having spoken with my independent VW mechanic he didn't recommend replacing the rear shocks with anything other than the correct part because the shocks are part of the ESP system which is not easily messed with.

So I tracked down an EBAY supplier in Berlin who had a set of Monroes C1514 / C1517 CES rear shocks for £425 all in, compared with £480 in the UK.

I'm not best pleased that the shocks have failed in 8 years of use and I see other people changing rear shocks on 2011 cars!

I suspect that the wonderful ESP system, plus comfort / sport settings, mean that the complicated electric shocks are working constantly and aren't robust enough to cope with "normal" lifespans.

I'd rather not have ESP or comfort / sport settings plus shocks that last and cost under £100 each when they do fail...
