    Hi!

My golf 1.6 mk iv started making a tapping noise yesterday. As i was driving home i noticed that the engine loses some power as it taps. The frequency of taps does not change what so ever, but it doesnt start until the car has been idling for some seconds or when i rev up the engine a bit.
    Oil levels are ok.

As a non mechanic im not sure where to start looking.

    Video of the noise:

You dont say what engine you have, and I can't view your video, some have exhaust gas recirculation, some don't, but your non engine speed related tapping noise could be the EGR valve clicking open and shut, or trying to move, have you got the EML engine symbol lit up on the dash ? Something else that ticks is the fuel tank evaporation canister solenoid valve, but this isn't usually very loud, if it is and you lose power then maybe you have a problem there ( hose come off or split?)

That is the 1.6 8 valve engine, usually engine code AKL. That is an odd noise and I would suspect it is an accessory drive problem, possibly a faulty air con compressor so first of all, remove the poly V belt and run the engine to see if the noise is gone. If it hasn't stopped, it is cam belt related and would suggest imminent failure.

There are no lights lit on the dash. The engine is the 1.8 valve (AKL i believe). I'll try to check the valves and hoses. Thank you!

Hmm, I will do some research and try to remove the Belt and check if the noise disappears. The problem is my lack of experience with engines, so i might do more harm than good.. thank you for your help!
