Michael Molloy coach death prompts tyre safety campaign - BBC News

Should they be changed at a certain timescale irrespective of their condition or wear.

Maybe, especially on larger and heavier vehicles.

yes they should be changed. rubber deteriorates over time, perishes and goes hard.. 5 years is a good age to change them really. all tyres have a date stamp on them so you know when they were made. some 'cheap' tyres from some mainly online retailers have been known to be old stock tyres, sat in a warehouse for 4 years or more.. always check the date on them..

There can't be many commercial vehicle tyres that haven't worn out well before that age, maybe fairground rides, farm trailers or classic vehicles. You'd think a near 20 year old tyre if not worn out would be showing signs of perishing, cracking etc. You see a lot of low mileage but old age tyres on caravans etc that have been sunbaked for years, obviously perished and ready to shred on the next trip, no compulsory testing of caravans tyres or brakes though. surprising this coach operator or the annual PSV tester hadn't picked up on that one though.

i think one problem is low mileage vehicles kept indoors, or with covers on the tyres to stop the sun getting to them, stops them perishing badly..
