I get it that spam is problem we all want to avoid but bloody hell.
You can't post this, you can't post that, you're in the wrong sub forum, this section is closed until you have 100 posts.

I see you have managed to smash Godwin's law with only two posts No offence taken… not sure how a POW might feel though.

Can you let me know where this 100 post section is… I have been missing out?

I had to Google what 'Godwins law' is so in my defence at least I was ignorant of it. A poor choice of analogy then, for which I apologise. 100 posts to be able to post in your own right in the potty mouth section. WTH?

I’m not sure quite what you mean by “post in your own right” but I’m guessing you can read and reply to posts, but can’t create a new one? There is (quite rightly) a 10 post requirement for sending PMs etc. which stops the members getting spammed to death by “special offers”. If there is a 100 post requirement then I would suggest it’s because of a previous incident rather than draconian measures just for the hell of it. Maybe it’s a little bonus for longer term members to let off some steam? I’m sure @stuart can provide a reason for this heinous restriction

To be fair, if it was as bad as you suggest (or on a lot of other forums) you would have had the ban hammer just for the offensive thread title.

I find it far more annoying when a new member posts a request for car/fault info then can’t even be bothered to click the like button… let alone reply with thanks when someone takes the time to help them out. Off they go with zero contribution and zero f**** given. It’s also irritating when they throw their toys out the pram when they find out they have to post a whole 10 times before they can PM a member offering their VCDS services for free.

On a side note, I think there should be a minimum post count required for the Reviews & Recommendations section… some rather suspect stuff going on there

didnt even think the 100 club still existed. that was where old timers could go and bitch about silly newcomers moaning about stuff that really didn't matter, or complaining mainly about the main dealers etc etc ... those types never really ever got to 100 posts so could never see what was being said about them , which was good cos some of it was not very nice.
but yeah, if you have any complaints please feel free to complain all you like. it won't get you anywhere. but what you can do is complain without getting banned, show me another forum where thats allowed to happen..

There are very few restrictions for "new members" on the site, apart from the following...

You need 100 posts for the "Chat - Adult Banter - Sponsored by Audi VW Specialist Centre" , this is the ONLY section you need posts, you can post in 99% of the others (see below)
You need 15 "useful" posts before you can send PM's or Emails to other members apart from the staff accounts, this is to stop spam as stated above.
You need 25 posts to use the classifieds, this is to stop people joining to get a free advert and never visit..

Other than that there are a couple of sections including the classifieds that need posts approving...

I would not call that a load of restrictions!

As for rules, yes there are quite a few, but over the 12 years the site has been running these have been updated as situations arise, and the site runs well with them, we have very little spam or issues to worry about, the members are all excellent and helpful and have the respect of the team, and non seem to bother too much about the rules, in fact very few even need to worry about them.

The biggest restriction we have is the banning of automatic registrations using "free" email accounts, this was done to, and has stopped almost all spam on the site as the people doing this used free accounts... Hotmail for instance have a great policy for members using there accounts, if you, as a member report an email from the site as "spam" that is a "black" mark against the site, too many and the site gets banned from sending emails to ALL users, not just the one reporting it, pity they do not offer the same service to website as they allow the use of there email addresses to spammer, but I can do nothing about it!

Genuine members will get in touch and get manually added..

If you have a problem, email/PM me.

Please read this carefully as it can be difficult to judge someones temperament just from bare text, my first post in this thread as an example.

I'm sorry to read that my comment has been so badly misinterpreted. I made it clear from the outset that there was, and is no intention to offend anybody, nor was or is there any tantrums or toy throwing. To reply to your points in order. As far I understand you can read posts but can't reply or start a new one until the 100 postmark? If your suggestion is correct then maybe for new members an explanation at the Head of the forum would be an idea. Shame about the flippant remark at the close of that sentence (heinous).

Your second point, I agree it's to the site's credit that I wasn't banned outright (although sledgehammer and nut spring to mind if that HAD been the case).
Furthermore this goes back to my original point... We all have opinions and should be respected for those opinions and not to do what I'm doing now.

Thirdly. A mistake a lot of people make is to assume that a new member doesn't have equal status to older members...WRONG!
New (to this forum or site) doesn't mean inexperienced or clueless.

Lastly "I find it far more annoying when a new member posts a request for car/fault info then can’t even be bothered to click the like button" (that smacks of that 'new member' status issue I mentioned) You want me to click the like button for my own question?

If and when I get a reply to my very first post I will of course thank the person helping me. As I write this it has had 88 reads but no replies. This post however... well it's human nature to have a go at any view that doesn't go with the flow so plenty of responses to this and I expect more which I will read and respect even if I don't agree with them.
This, for anybody else who reads this, I think is how things should be done. Fair enough?

I suspect you’re trolling, but just in case you’re serious I’ll respond

If you feel your thread title “What happens when ordinary people have a little power” primary purpose wasn’t to offend then we will have to agree to disagree. Your comment about relating your experience here to a POW camp is on another level. Making offensive statements then demanding nobody take offence doesn’t really work. Accusing people of having power go to their head and running a forum like a Nazi concentration camp is blatantly offensive IMHO. I also don’t think this “opinion” demands respect either.

If you read my post again you will notice the “request for car/fault info” part. If you have been offered help and not given thanks then this also applies to you, but unless you have done this as a former member then I’m not sure why you felt this was directed at you. I was making a point that there are things that are more annoying and detrimental to future contribution than post count restrictions. You previously asked for help and got no replies. It might be that nobody knows or doesn’t have the time to help, but it could also be due to the reason I suggested.

Just so you don’t make any further assumptions on my behalf, I do not feel that new members are automatically inexperienced or clueless… where did that come from? I do feel that people who have previously posted helping others have a higher forum status than a new member though… that’s how a forum works IMHO. It doesn’t mean they are special people or superior to others… only that they have contributed more to the forum.

I have had a look at the Adult section and stumbled across this sticky post at the top (head) of the forum:

VW Audi Forum - The #1 Volkswagen (VW) Forum Dedicated to the whole Volkswagen (VW) Group
