Car intermittently not starting, cranks fully (S4 B6)

Hi,


I've run into a problem since yesterday intermittently whereby my car will crank and crank but not start. Randomly it will start, and randomly it won't. It's happened about 3/10 starts since yesterday, no new codes are showing (except G28 speed sensor), I was told by a friend it may be electrical and looking online it looks like maybe a relay but I'm hoping it's not a fuel or pressure issue.


I'm trying to sell my car and have someone viewing this weekend so don't want to sink too much into the car but I don't want to sell it to someone if it has a big problem. Any advice is appreciated - I'm aware of the airbag MIL and rear left light along with the alarm codes:

I don't know if it will help, but I had this problem on my B7 avant a few years ago, as you say it would crank fine but not start, I noticed that when it wouldn't start the glow plug light didnt come on, turning ignition on and off would fix after a number of attempts, but it gradually got worse it turned out to be the body control module not communicating with the engine module therefore not switching the imobilizer off.
luckily I had an aftermarket warranty that covered the cost.

If the ecu cant detect the speed of the engine, it doesn't know its turning / cranking. Surely it wont start. Not a professional or mechanic, just my thoughts.

If you've got vcds there you can check the cranking speed I think it needs to be 280rpm minimum to start ( you'd best check that, it rings a bell with me though). does the rev counter jump up when cranking? if not the G28 may be the fault, if the rev counter works maybe your battery or starter is a bit tired, that ignition switch fault code looks suspicious as well.

It's the crank angle sensor, engine speed sensor, easy enough to change. Don't delay fixing it as it will eventually totally fail and leave you stranded
Luckily it has logged the fault code, it doesn't always trigger it.
