    Hi all

    looking for some guidance.
we had the emisions recall done last week and now we have had the van break down and our obd check was saying egr fault.
VW dealer are saying our work vans problem is not down to them and the recent emissions recall (unlike the thousands im reading about on the internet)
They say the egr cooler has blocked and its not a failed egr valve
secondly they say VW will only do free replacement if the vehicle is under 160,000 miles. we are nearer 190,000.
ive been searching the web and to me it looks like the egr and cooler are basically the same thing but im struggling to argue with them as im not that savy with vw engines or diesels :/

any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

    thanks in advance.

    Steve.

They are correct, the valve would have failed anyway because they were useless and unfit for purpose in the first place. Why did you have it done when there is SO much advice to not have it done, or didn't you know?

A common one for this problem, the CAYD and CAYE engines. The EGR valve ( 03L 131 512 D) would have failed anyway. It can't be fixed at the moment, they have been on back order for weeks and there is no known date as to when they will be available and when they do come in there are literally thousands of people waiting for one in the UK alone never mind the rest of the world. Pattern aftermarket and recon units are rubbish, I tried two and one failed within weeks and another immediately which is bloody annoying when it takes 5 hours to change one.

ive spoke to head quarters and they are going to get back to us in the next 48 hrs.
the dealer told us the parts are on back order and looking at ten days.......clearly going to be longer if they have the shortage your saying!
luckily we have been given a van.

I spoke to my TPS this morning, started giving him the number and got as far as 03L 1 and he finished it off for me and said they have no release date, could be 10 days but they said that six weeks ago. I am just reading a book called Faster, Higher, Farther: The Inside Story of the Volkswagen Scandal by Jack Ewing and the then boss of VW Ferdinand Piech described this scenario as a virus that comes from making many cars share the same part under his platform sharing strategy. It is all well and good when there are no issues but if one part in a platform sharing program goes wrong in a big way, you have a huge number of affected (infected) cars right across your range.

so if someone set up making egr valves then they could make a small fortune. all you need is a small factory in china and one genuine boxed egr valve. hmmm, ideas./
