YES - all it was, in the end, was the connection on the oil temp sensor itself! I think the connector had bust a retaining clip, so even though it seemed to be plugged in ok, it was dropping the connection and the fan was coming on, and the dash was reading a fat zero. I bought a new connector from the main dealer, but it looked like such a pig of a job that I just used a tie-wrap to secure the connector in place. It then read 90 degrees and has seemed fine ever since - although - i did glance at the gauge today while driving about 30mph, and the needle dropped to 70 then back up to 90 a couple of times.. I'm not too worried. I know the water stat and oil temp sensor are good.
