Turn thermostat -item 2- approx. 90° (1/4 turn) anti-clockwise -arrow- and remove it from hose connection.
    Remove O-ring -1-.
    Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
    Note
    Renew O-ring.
Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring as required.
Insert thermostat -3- with new O-ring -2- into hose connection -1-.
l When inserting, the cross-piece on the thermostat should be horizontal as shown in the illustration.
Then turn thermostat 90° (1/4 of a turn) clockwise.
    Lubricate O-ring with coolant additive.
    Fill cooling system → Anchor.
    Tightening torque

As I recall, I did have to purchase a new housing also, for correct tab-age. Needle never actually seems to move from its lower most position when cold, ie 50 degs. When I have time, I'll try checking the stat fitment, and maybe have a replacement on hand..

Maybe someone can tell if the temp gauge has a separate earth which may be faulty.

The replacement temp sensor was made by "intermotor" but I made sure it was the correct part number to match the original. So, no, it wasn't a genuine Audi one. But if non-oem aren't up to the job, it's a wonder they ever sell any?

The needle never moves from it's leftmost position

if the needle never mores at all, not even a little bit then i would do a needle test (if possible) using vcds. see if the needle will move at all or if the cluster is dead.
