Ok thanks I'll do that ,the mechanic said may be it could be the tandem pump causing the starting issue ,but didn't think that as its only 12 months old but it's a possibility know that it's obviously leaking ,he mentioned the high pressure side gasket may have failed hence loosing the pressure of the diesel in the cylinder head and returning back to the tank

I've ordered that moly liqui purge I just add that to a tank of fuel ? The mechanic replaced the tandem pump and believes it could of been the gasket causing the issue slight crease in it allowing the deisel to return back ,apparently the vw gaskets are metal but buying the replacement pumps they give you cheap fibre material gaskets ,I'll wait and see in the morning see what the outcome is fingers crossed

For a gradual flush add it to the fuel, the less fuel, the more concentrated the clean. The car will actually run on Moly Diesel Purge and for intensive cleaning of the forward fuel lines and fuel injectors it is often run straight into the feed to the tandem pump. And yes the new gaskets supplied with some pumps are not metal and do not last as long. I was supplied a metal version by VW but (me having not checked it carefully) it was creased as they had shoved it into a small polythene bag bending it just near the fuel port cutout so it failed in quick time. Inspected the next one very closely and made sure it went on the cleanest, driest head face EVER! No leaks, smooth running and good mpg.

My 2007 Passat estate sports 2L tdi has had cold start problems for months. Researching forums etc. I decided to speak to VW Centre in Derby. They suggested diagnosis cost £110. I then telephoned a couple of garages, suggested a mobile diagnostic test cost £80. The mobile diagnosis guy was more helpful than VW. He said it wouldn’t be the glow plugs, it wouldn’t be the battery. However I did read on this forum someone saying that if the battery was only delivering 12 volts and not the 12.7v needed, starting could be a problem. Anyway even though the engine was turning over fine, I decided to replace the battery as I’ve had the car for 5 years plus. Boom... first push of the button and she started straight away. This is possibly a common problem with these older VW cars, so why the fick can’t the trade be more honest. Hope this helps someone if they have an old VW with first start of day problems. Thx
