Yes a compressions test with the cam out would show nothing, nowt in, nowt to squish... A leak down test is a bit more involved as you need a good air supply. The worry with the ABD is that the laves are parallel to the bores so if the valves hit, they get rammed into the lifters unlike when they are canted on say a 16v and it bends the valve out of the way so new lifters as well but then again that is a given anyway. Literally I could, with the parts to hand and a skim arranged, do that in a day even with my knackered back.

well luckily I have an actually air compressor kit in the house. Not massive but it should be obvious where the air is escaping.

So with the ABD engine, as you are saying, it's a simple engine, so is it possible that I could do more damage with this test?

You can buy proper adapters but originally I made my own before getting a posh Snap Off set. I took an old plug, smashed and drilled out the centre, welded a piece of handy steel tube to the plug and then welded a PCL tail connector to the tube, served me well for years and I still have it. When you connect the air supply, if the piston of the relevant cylinder is above BDC, the engine will fly around with enough force to kill you should you be in the way, have a spanner on the bottom pulley nut or if the car is in gear...

    okay,

bad news is, Annoyingly I cannot get the Spark plugs out ! but after the cam shaft was off I noticed how None except ONE tappet was at its highest point. here is a picture. Is this good enough to determine that the valves are broken without doing the air compression test? apparently I do not have the correct size to remove the spark plugs without digging for another tool....

18869799_10159204372825354_932646452_o.jpg As you can see the fourth tappet from the left was highest, I could even remove it and see the spring beneath.

    Please advise !

The cam sprocket is on a keyway
And the spring didn't come out! But just the tappet bucket as it was high up enough for me to grab
But none of the others were..

I dont want to sound rude here. You dont come across as if you have an igloo about engines..
Im all for people having a go, but things not dont correctly can and will bite you in the bum/wallet..
I think once you have taken the head off, you will see the damage to the valves.
Might be cheaper to get another head than get yours fixed.

I'm still learning - I don't really learn unless I practically do something so this is the only way I'm afraid!

The car is either going to get fixed by me, or it's going to scrap so I'll be careful and really want to fix it, but if i make it worse ... well you see where im going with this!

Plan now though is yes, I'll remove the Head and see what is broken, from the looks of things, it'll be 7 valves and hopefully nothing else!! but it's going to have to wait til after this weekend But I will keep you all updated.

thanks for all the help - so far

It is good to learn.but modern engines are very unforgiving if errors are made and they can cause a disaster and be very costly.
It is vitally important to nearly eat and understand the workshop manuals prior to attempting job.
    Good luck with your project.
