For the last week or so, the start/stop feature never cuts in. When I stop at traffic lights the "A" symbol with a circle around it appears on the instrument cluster (next to the gear selection), but it has a line through it. According to the instructions this can happen if the aircon is working hard or windscreen is being defrosted etc, but that's not the case. I've tried pressing harder on the brake pedal, but nothing seems to stop the engine.

Could it it be that this is normal due to the warmer weather or is something else going on?

Mine often doesn't cut in because the dashcam drains the battery and I mostly do short journeys. As soon as I go on a decent run it kicks back in.

As you say, air con on full blast or putting it in Sport stops it kicking in.

It's nothing to do with how you push the brake pedal.

Yep, I wonder if it could be the battery, but I've been doing some good journeys, aircon is normal and it's usually in Comfort or Auto, so I'd be surprised if its the battery.

Hmm, the instructions say, "you can control whether or not the engine is switched off by varying the amount of pressure on the brake pedal." It's not that important, but it's bugging me now!

Just realised why I've never seen the brake peddle pressure make a difference. I always have hold assist turned on, so the engine stays off until I press the accelerator as opposed to easing off the brake pedal.

Your right about amount of pressure on the break peddle when sat in traffic

another huge difference this time of year with air con on if you press the eco mode button on the air con this also makes a diff with stop/start
if the eco button is pressed the stop/start will work more often

Thanks, I'll give that a go. It hasn't worked for the last 4 times I've driven the car, I suppose no journey has been over an hour and it's been pretty warm lately so we've had the air con on all the time...and it's a black car..! I'm not worried if it's doing what it's suppose to do, especially if it's the same for everyone else!

So....I figured out how to connect my old CTEK battery charger to the battery. On my A6 I could use the cigarette socket, but on the Q7 nothings happens. So I used the terminal under the bonnet for a couple of hours. I also switched off air con and hunted for some red traffic lights...! I know I could have just stopped anywhere, but any excuse to drive a little further....

And it worked! The start/stop worked perfectly. I don't do a lot of miles so I've just invested in a new CTEK (MXS 7, which has the AGM option for star/stop engines) and that should do the trick. Thanks for the advice.

Excellent! Glad to hear it's just normal behaviour and not an issue.

I think the stop / start is supersensitive to the battery charge and if it's not close to 100% charged, it doesn't kick in.

I've got the MX5 which I bought when I kept draining the X5 battery with the aux heater. I've used it once on the Q7 just to give the battery a decent charge, not because I had to.

Even with my short journeys, although stop / start doesn't come on, the dashcam parking mode rarely causes the dashcam to stop recording - mine is set to the default voltage to stop you draining the battery.
