    Hi folks

Car has developed a loud squeak at idle that increases with slight rev increase, but disappears when the Air Con is switched off.

I've uploaded a video to YouTube so you can hear it at the link below.

Any pointers as to what's causing this would be greatly appreciated.

disconnect the fan belt and see when engine is running it makes that sound ...................................... might be a bearing in a pulley away

going by the " disappears when the aircon is switched off " ...................... likely the aircon pump , but I would want to make sure its not a cambelt pulley

I keep my aircon all year round in my diesels, doesn't use any more diesel and keep things working

    Disconnect the fan belt?

im not certain what you mean as the serpentine belt drives all the auxiliary components.....
ive ordered a new belt and tensioner based on the vibration witnessed on the tension itself, but given it disappears with the air con off I'm now thinking it's possibly the air con pulley

It could be the alternator one way pulley, with the belt off make sure the pulley slips in the reverse drive discretion.

    Crasher,

thanks for the response. I will check the alternator pulley. Will the alternator pulley affect the air con, as the noise stops when the air con is switched off?

if you look at the video I took, you will see the belt tensioner housing lugs moving....is this normal?

could be when the a/con is on the extra load is giving the belt some stress, you can test the alternator pulley without taking the serpentine off,get a thin screwdriver down the fins to the cooling fans,it should turn one way and lock the other.

So I've slipped the belt off the alternator pulley and spun it.....

i can see the innereds of the alternator spinning when the pulley is spun either way?

does this mean it's the alternator pulley that's goosed or should it spin in both directions?

It should freewheel anti clockwise and lock clockwise, slip a screwdriver down to lock the cooling blades just to make sure its not turning through the friction of the bearings.

New pulley, the AC compressor loads up the belt and stops the noise.
