OK so this isn't truly scientific but its still interesting. I am doing weekly runs to Essex at present for work early on a Sunday morning. My beloved now 5 year old A6 is in the garage for a leak in the air suspension. Yes a Q3 is less aerodynamic than a A6 but the official EU figures should reflect that....

2 near identical "early morning" : motorway runs of 140miles return trip. Last Sunday/this Sunday. Same speeds/traffic/weather/load.

Run 1: My two tonne "gas guzzler" 3.0V6 twin turbo audi A6 310bhp. Result 39mpg actual vs 43 mpg official. 91% realistic. 1400rpm at 70mph. PASS

Run 2: Courtesy car 2.0 4 cylinder boring audi Q3. 150bhp yaaawn. 37mpg actual vs 55mpg official. (despite tyres at 50psi for some reason!!!) 67% realistic. 2100rpm at 70mph. FAIL

Decent big engines are better for the environment on the motorway. FACT. Just imagine if i had dragged a 300kg hybrid battery for 140miles too.

Come on Audi fix my A6 please. The environment needs it....

    I await the 4.0 V8 C8 A6....

Why in earth would they give you a Q3 when you drive an A6?
When my A6 was in Leicester Audi they offered me an A1 1.0 tfsi as a loaner... no thanks, had to go to Worksop and back so didn't fancy getting squashed like a bug on a windshield trying to get on to the M1.

I recently came back from 'up north' and got 52mpg from my 3.0V6.
My dad drives a 1.0 3cyl petrol fordbuzzbox and gets about 45 on the same route, I know which is a more comfortable place to be.

Hope your BiTDI gets fixed soon

Yep I had that car for one day A1 when my allroad was in at the end of last year .....and it was shocking .it was the 1.4 TFSI and used more fuel that my old car which was a 4.2 v8 A8 ....called them up and had them change it for a A4 est.....which was like a mansion inside compared to the A1

    I changed my previous 2.0TDi 177PS Multi Avant (2013) for a new 3.0TDi 272PS Quattro S-Tronic Avant in December.

I use it for work, so travel to the same places as I did on my previous car.

Old car regularly returned average 45mpg between tankfulls, new one currently 47mpg average. It's only done 7k miles, and seems to get better all the time, so it might get better than that.

I'm amazed to be honest. The 2.0 seems to be no better in real world economy than the 3.0 and I get the additional bonus of the power when I want it and the security of 4 wheel drive.

    Silly how it sounds

    i had a Audi Q7 3litre 272bhp had it from new

my weekly run of 60 miles on A roads single carriageway and often have to slow for cars turning right
    normal got 36-38mpg

    now have a Audi SQ7 4.0litre V8 twin turbo plus 48V electric turbo 438bhp

same run as above 38-42mpg can't work that one out

car has only done 900 miles so far should get even better with age as loosen up

ok granted you plant ya foot down or drive round town it's not as good
but like for like the bigger triple turbo 4.0 litre is as good if not better mpg if you drive it sensible lol

Makes you wonder how they get hammered for road tax when most of the time as expressed in these posts, they are actually better on fuel.

Road tax should get spent on the roads! But IMO it should be based on emissions 50%, the other 50% of the tax should be based on gross vehicle weight so 'road tax' is higher for the vehicles that are actually creating more road damage.

Come on Prius and PHEV drivers, cough up your fair share
