    Except Crasher, of course

A very high percentage of posts on the forum seem to be by owners of diesels.

Is this because there are far more of them, or because they have more problems?

I've only driven a diesel car as it suits my annual mileage, I don't have any mechanical issues.

My reliable 2009 A3 now has 180k on it, its just after its 18th oil change and 3rd timing belt.

no hate them, stinky noisy horrible things that deliver all their torque in one big heap then die. but they are cheaper to run, well, my old 80 is anyway. give me a petrol anyday, minimum of 6 cylinders and preferably turbo'd.

Stinky yes , but I aint breathing it when inside it .

No big heap of torque dump if you get the right map

    180 bhp and 60+mpg .

mine has the right map, torque curve is lovely and flat, but its all gone when you hit 3500 rpm, just about the point a petrol turbo is coming on song..

My 3.0 tdi is 215hp and loads more torque than the 2.0 Tfsi. I drove both engines in A5 and A6 as well as the 2.0tdi (which IMO was too weak for the the weighty A6).
The higher tax, insurance and fuel bill of the petrol was clearly good reason to buy the derv.

Don't get me wrong, when it made sense I had a petrol 2.8 v6 n/a C4, it made sense because petrol in the US was 1/2 the price of of U.K. and there is no road tax benefit to diesel

My last three cars have been diesels - an A4, a Tiguan and an X1 - and have had no problems apart from a sensor failure on the A4. Deciding on which engine to go for next, I keep reading various reports of plans to charge to enter various cities, increased parking charges, extra tax on diesel, etc. The road tax advantage no longer is relevant (I still don't understand the logic behind that) so I decided to go for the 2.0 TFSI engine on the A3 I have just ordered. Whether or not that was the right decision, only time will tell.

Yes, they clearly miscalculated the ability of manufacturers to reduce the emissions of their cars (or at least reduce the test results). It would have made more sense to me to keep the bands but increase the rates.
