    Back to diesel loving/hating...
My v6 tdi is quieter than many petrols ive owned.
When I bought mine the cost of a fully loaded 3yr old A6 in 3.0tdi vs 2.0tfsi was basically the same, so what you got for your money with the petrol was a higher reving engine that drank more fuel and made less torque and cost loads more to tax.
    It just made no sense.

Until the USA start running low on crude and gas prices sky rocket they will continue to shun diesel and drive gas guzzlers.
Here in UK, people's wallets make them buy diesels or little petrol cars.
Me, I want a nice car with reasonable power and 5 seats (3 growing kids) so a little petrol 3cyl siht box Ford Focus like my dad drives is just not going to cut it

It was great that you could buy the 250, stick a set of 350 pistons, barrels and head on, not forgetting the other front disc and caliper.

As diesel engines have evolved they have made them smoother (like a petrol) they have made them quieter (like a petrol) see where I'm going with this? Diesel was a big plus when it was cheaper than petrol, the fuel companies/government exploited the fact by putting the prices up so the only way you were saving was because it would go further per gallon.
Diesel's are great for torque but torque wrecks stuff, cv joints, gearboxes, clutches, dual mass flywheels, tyres.
It used to be that all you needed was a good battery to get it started, not now, they are so complex, sticking EGR, boost problems (variable geometry turbo's sticking, overboost/underboost) that's only the tip of the iceberg as far as diesel problems are concerned.
I could go on but I feel that most are either pro diesel or petrol and there's not many sitting on the fence. Seems to be the government have come full circle and they want them off the road not that long after they did the car scrappage scheme to get rid of older petrol cars that were more often than not replaced with a diesel.

I spent a large part of my life working on and around fairly large diesel engines of the GM EMD variety, so the last thing I want at the end of a day working on my car is to go back into the house stinking of diesel fuel.

Give me 4 years and I will be back in the dealers trying out 2018 model cars (3 yrs old again).
If I still need a good size 4-5door, i'll happily drive away again in the one with the best bang/buck in power/torque, lowest road tax and insurance and best MPG.
If is the petrol PHEV, so be it
