Currently stranded 100 miles from home in the father's garage. Changed timing belt but it wouldn't start. Did all the relevant timing checks and all fine. Tried several batteries but no joy. Bled fuel system again and it almost started which makes me think fuel system somewhere. Tandem pump appears functional but I don't think fuel is getting to the injectors somehow. Tank lifter pump?

    Any suggestions welcome and appreciated.

Edit: Plenty of fuel getting to filter from tank. Would mean a problem between filter and injectors.

Edit2: Might be internal failure of tandem pump - trying a spare at the weekend - will check starter too and have 4 fully charged batteries to choose from!

Now Closed - Non start was as a result of a failed fuel tank lift pump. Replaced, bled fuel system and started almost immediately.

Especially as the feed to the filter spat out fuel when I cycled the ignition the first time so I thought it was ok initially.

Thought I'd done something wrong when changing valve stem seals, injector seals, camshafts, camshaft seals and timing kit! Plenty to go wrong there but all that was fine. The only other problem was that VW had put my new tandem pump gasket in a polythene bag and tied it so tight it was bent near the fuel apertures. Instead of taking it back I thought it would be alright so put it on and promptly had a stream of diesel running out the bottom when the car was started. Luckily the original one was only a few months old and still perfect so cleaned up and went back on - no more leak.
