My ROUGH estimate is 650000 Tonnes of them per year from around 2040, in the UK alone...

Battery Recycling as a Business - Battery University

herein lies the problem. lead acid, yes, profitable to recycle. lipo batteris et al. not profitable. easier to just dump them at sea or dig a big hole and bury them.

Ohh well, at least I will have something to scream about for the next 20 years until the **** hits the fan again. Anyone know any poems about batteries?

Thanks for the replies! Especially Crasher! I now just need to work out if it's worth me buying the the full Mahle suspension replacement kit or buy this bits as they need replacing.

If there's 100 Tesla giga-factories by 2050 which some speculate there will be, then the US geo surveys says there's around 17 years of lithium production. Now Lithium is too cheap to be worth recycling though if it started to become remotely scarce this would change. I think the governments would require lithium recycling before it's financially feasible as having to bury so much batteries is a problem. It's likely that the relatively small recycling cost would be passed on to the EV buyers.

I believe we won't be using lithium for more than another decade in EV's, as there are already other battery technologies in the prototype phase which use even more common elements. The energy density will continue to rise as extremely small scale 3d printing technology improves.

I'm happy to hold on to my TDI, I live in a rural area so nitrous oxide is not a big issue. I'll be growing rape seed oil (and other oil producing plants) which will be initially used by restaurants then converted to bio diesel to the ASTM / EN standards. Oil producing plants are by far the cheapest solar panels!

    Cheers
    Mike

The only trouble is that from a Li Ion battery you can only recover about 5% Lithium, the rest is Cobalt, Nickel and various other fillers and rubbish. The world needs a better battery, what I call the 4/4 battery.

    1/4 the weight
    1/4 the size
    1/4 the cost
    1/4 the environmental impact
    4 x the life
    4 x the capacity
    4 x the charging speed
    4 x safer

Reaching the energy density contained in a litre of petrol is at the moment impossible.
