Hi. So picked up yesterday a 2000 1.8 20v Passat. 5 speed manual. 120k on clock with full main dealer history to 95k.

Am I right in thinking that makes it a b5.5? Not sure why though.

Ok so my Issue is clutch or gearbox related.

    1. it has a high biting point, literally an inch from completely released when it bites.

    2. Once up to temp the gears become hard to engage with the clutch pressed fully down and it makes no difference if I'm stationary or moving.

    3. This morning while reversing up my drive which is quite steep I had very obvious clutch judder.

I've read about high bite points being normal and hard to engage gears being gearbox oil problem but wasn't sure if these are model specific or not and therefore unsure where to start looking.

Any help appreciated as I need to sort it quick really.

    Cheers.

    B5.5 need a pic to be 100% .

So you bought privately a 1.8T that requires a clutch and dmf , not cheap ?

Did you not test drive it ?

    It's not a turbo, it's a 1.8 20v normally aspirated, I didn't think they used dmf!

Bought it so cheap though and I do all my own work so only parts to pay out on.

    It's the 1996-2001 model... not 2000-2005 model.

    S 20v

Does that help work out the model specific number?

Sounds more like clutch needs changing rather than gear oil, probably why it was being sold. Gearbox out if you have a lift or can get the car up high enough, I wouldn't do it lying on my back though, also seen folks pull the engine out with the car more or less on the level.

My instinct is clutch, but you know how it is when you start reading things on the internet lol.

I've got engine crane, big jacks and plenty of ramps and stands. Used to taking transit engines out on the drive so this little gearbox should pose much issue :-).

Just need to be sure first.

Does this model have dmf then does anyone know?

    Cheers

Sounds like you're tooled up for the job then !! sorry I don't know if this is DMF or not, I thought they were mainly on the diesels, not sure about earlier petrols, hopefully not in your case!

Yea diesel will have them due torque produced. I believe the 1.8 turbo petrol has dmf also.

But not sure on this on just being a plain old 1.8 injection lol.

    Anyone else got any ideas?

Ok I checked it out. This one does have dmf also.

Question is can I get away with just changing the clutch or is the dmf also knackered.

No slip under load at slow or fast speeds, level ground or up hill.
No knocking or rattling at idle, start up or shut down as dmf would generally do.

    Just the two symptoms.

High biting point with gears becoming notchy and harder to get in once up to temp.

Slight judder but only so far in reverse on my steep drive.

    What you guys think?

Could be a clutch slave cylinder that's a bit sluggish.
Not sure how easy it is to change? If the box needs to come off you may as well change the clutch. With a petrol i'd think about a solid FW conversion as an option.
