I've been out for a good drive this morning and got everything up to temp.

Absolutely no dmf symptoms I can find.

Clutch is smooth to engage and disengage. Just has a high biting point so that seems good too.

The gear change still gets stiff to get in and out of gear once warm, also very notchy and easy to not quite snap into gear.

My thought is if the reason it's hard to take out of gear was clutch itself then the clutch would not be releasing completely when depressed, but that's not the case.

So I feel this has to be something to do with the linkage. If I turn the engine off and try changing gear without using the clutch it feels no different to pushing the clutch in and changing gear which says linkage to me also. It's stiff, notchy and not very positive at all.

Does any of that make sense? Anyone think the same?

Ive done 2 clutches now, both B5.5's estates with the 1.9PD.
Before changing them, both had highish biting points but the biggest issues I had was that both were pain to get into 1 st gear when standing still with the engine ticking over.
This I think was due to the disc sticking on the input shaft and so not fully disengaging the clutch.
One little test I used to try was, go to select 1 st but only half way, that is so it reachs the point at which you can feel through the stick that the gears just start to rub together, at this point, fully depress the clutch and the light grating should stop! In my case it didnt making it hard to get first gear!
On both cars, once I changed out the DMF and clutch kit, all my problems had gone!
Incidentally, mileage on them both was 75K and 160 K respectively. The DMF on the low mileage one was ******* whereas the high mileage one was so good, I flogged it on ebay for 40 quid!

Linkage seems ok, greased up gearlevel end.
I've just bought the m16 tamper proof socket to change the gear box oil so hopefully that will be the issue.

I've read a lot about oil degrading and causing stiff gears once hot.

I must admit, its worth a try but I changed both on mine, didn't make any difference. Make sure you get the viscosity correct because if you go one grade heavier, it will make the issue even worse!
