    Hi,

I recently replaced the coolant flange on my car as it was suspected to be leaking. After filling back up with G13 and leaving for 20 mins with the heaters on/expansion bottle cap off to 'bleed'. I drove the car the next day and the car began to overheat on the motorway. I crawled home and let it cool.

The pipes coolant pipes were hot and pressurised. If i let it idle up to 90 degrees now the lower rad pipe and whole radiator seem cold. The upper rad pipe is very hot.

Heater blowers are intermittently luke warm/cold/hot when accelerating hard.

I tested the thermostat in a boiling pan and it seemed to open up. Browsing on here people suggested bleeding via the heater matrix pipes. I found two pipes at the back of the bay going up into the bulkhead. I could not see bleed holes on the pipework though. On idle the left hand pipe gets hot and the right hand pipe is cold.

Water is flowing back to the expansion bottle which suggests pump is still good?

I have a new thermostat here to try. Can anyone else shed any light on what it might be or how I can resolve?

    Many thanks in advance

What is the 'flange' you replaced ? Is this one of the old VE tdi engines or PD, It's sounds like it's airlocked.

The coolant flange that sits on the right hand side of the block and the temperature sensor sits into. It is essentially a piece of plastic with a gasket and a few coolant pipes connected. Apparently a common issue. It is the PD engine. Thanks for your input. Any info on how to bleed it correctly?

The bleed hole is on one of the heater hoses at bulkhead. You need to loosen clip and pull hose (there is only one bleed hole between them) back to expose hole. It seems very likely you have an air lock.

You should be able to bleed it from cold as water always circulates round the heater matrix.

Theres no holes on the heater matrix pipes. Today i drained the system and refilled. Managed to get all the blowers warm and all the pipes warm. I took it for a drive on the motorway.

After a while the blowers went from hot to cold and the car began to over heat. Is this a sign of a faulty thermostat? I have one i can fit here.

After refilling system and driving for a small journey,it is important to top up the system or overheating can occur. I expect this is because of thermostat opening.
I never have need to bleed system doing it this way on similar engine.
How high did the temperature rise when it overheated, and for how long ?.

Hi Micheal, i dont think this is the case as the stat certainly opened on my drive, temp sat at 90 degrees and then the level dropped and both pipes to the rad and the rad got hot. Thanks though. Temp got over 100 before i shut it off and let it cool before driving home.

Fitted new thermostat. Still overheating and blowing cold on the heaters most of the time. Im guessing it could only be the water pump ?
