I would take it elsewhere. Dealers have little interest in cars over 5 years old.

If that's the case then the problem has developed from only happening when towing, and the dealer should be able to replicate the fault on a test drive and see where you stand with this warranty. Good luck.

No I don't. Do you think that could be a cause?

A faulty one can cause pressure problems. Mostly coolant filling the expansion tank

If the pressure is not right it will boil at a lower temperature than if it is higher, long shot but could be worth a try.

Took the sharan back to the VW dealer who drove it around and witnessed overheating and the STOP sign coming on. Said they noticed high pressure in the water system and did a crystals test to check for carbon monoxide in the water system but negative result. Also did a pressure test but again negative result so no definitive evidence of a head gasket problem. They recommend I pay them to take the cylinder head off to check for a head gasket (£750 plus parts) but with a negative crystals and pressure test result seems an expensive gamble that the head gasket is actually the problem. Problem is they will charge a £120 investigation fee unless I go ahead with the £750 engine strip down. . Then if it is the head gasket that would be covered by my warrantee. If not then I am £800 ish out of pocket and no further forward.

How does your Sharan run from cold? Is it very flat from cold in the winter months?. Have you had the turbo diaphragm actuator tested. I wonder if it is split and so it's in the full boost default causing excessive cylinder pressure which in turn is causing cylinder head lift... Just a thought.

Sounds like you are tied to the dealer by this warranty. To me , the problem with the engine seems like a head gasket or cracked head, that only opens up while driving, that gasket fault or head crack has developed from only showing when pushing the engine hard (towing) to happening while regular driving. The cooling system is gassing up causing gas pockets around the system, loss of circulation and coolant, when they pressure test it, it has cooled down enough to close the crack. When did they do the crystal test? In the workshop after the engine had cooled a bit or at the roadside after a good ragging while it was still red hot and losing coolant? Is the cylinder head covered by the warranty or just the gasket?
