Just a word of warning,My sons 140 tdi air con pump has been dead for quite some time so I decided to bite the bullet and sort it,anyway the shear plate splines on the pulley were stripped, the pulley was turning but not transfering the drive to the input shaft hence no cooling. So bought a new one from x8r, part arrived, decent piece of kit, fitted it,nice cool fresh air!Well about a week later the compressor sounded like a bag of bolts, shredded the serpentine belt damaged the hose etc, could have taken out the cambelt, luckily its ok,anyway the moral of the story is,if your shear plate ihas stripped it splines, its probably goosed inside.Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the company that supplied the part, just giving some advice for caution before thinking its only the splines that have worn.

Good advice BUT the company selling the drives is , in my opinion, in the wrong, if the shear coupling goes it means the compressor is seizing inside and they will be only too aware of this, they should at least place a warning on the box to make this clear, on the Golf 5/6 this is a very common problem and in supplying the part they were endangering your cam belt as you pointed out. It is a similar situation on the older TDI's with hydraulic power steering, the alternator clutch fails and when on lock the flapping belt puts huge stress on the belt adjuster which then fails and can also take out the cam belt, many companies now warn of this in the box with a new adjuster, it is commercial responsibility.
