Hi, I am not 100% sure what I am looking at but it looks like the clutch is missing? I took a video which you can see below

    12 May 2017 - YouTube

Does this mean I need a new compressor or what do I need to do to fix this?

    Cheers
    David

It is missing. Get a replacement pulley or clutch.

As above, someone has taken the clutch driven section off, either beacuse the compressor is seized and the annular drive rubber got shredded, or as happened to me, the rubber shredded and the driven section was rattling around in the drive pulley. See if the comp shaft can be turned over relatively easy by hand, if so it would be worth trying a replacement complete pulley assembly. I couldn't find just a new pulley , only whole compressors for £
££ , and ended up getting a complete compressor off a passat from a breakers for 30 quid. I took just the pulley off the breakers comp, then dropped mine out of the cradle with the hoses stiil attached and gassed, fitted the second hand pulley then bolted the comp back in the cradle. That was 2 years ago and still working ok touch wood. There is a thin shim easily missed which is needed to give the clutch running clearance when the elect magnet is not energised, otherwise relatively easy to sort with the car front up on ramps in my driveway. It's a 2005 passat btw.

Just a thought - did the garage that took your gas also take the pulley off, is that why they said its not worth fixing, or did they even look to see if the pulley was there? Do they know if the compressor is seized already? Worth asking them maybe.

If they can't see that's missing l would give them a miss, have a look on top of the undetray it might be still there,if you're not a foyer you'll need a good air con specialist not just regassers.

They're good points !! For the driven section of the clutch to come off, the centre bolt holding it onto the shaft needs to come out, it may have just worked loose and the clutch maybe sitting in the tray, will need the thin shim as well though, could probably make or find another one, i might still have my old one in my bottom draw graveyard. It is only an 8mm bolt from memory. There is a big circlip holding the bearing and drive pulley on, visible in his video clip

The garage was recommended to me from the tyre place i normally use, when I phoned them they told me they specialize in AC, when I was picking it up from him he told me that there was some faults stored but nothing relating to the AC system (wrong) and also told me that the clutch was not spinning so there must be something wrong with my compressor and it is beyond economical repair, obviously he never even bothered to look at this and even if the compressor needed replace it is still worth fixing it in my opinion.

Hi, I have replaced the clutch but I am still getting the same error message regarding the sensor, is it most likely a faulty sensor (brand new) or could it be something else?

    Regards
    David

I have tried another sensor now which is the exact same from another known working car and I am still getting

00256 - Sensor for refrigerant pressure/temperature Lower limit not reached

Should I try taking it to get re gassed again in case it didn't work properly the first time?

Im just guessing here but you may find in law its something to do with the fgas regs that they arent allowed to leave gas in an inop system.
Could also be your car has no pulley was seen as strange and maybe you were some sort of catch them out test, so they were cya big time!

Of cours ethey could just be incompetent
