I decided to do a DIY interim oil and filter change on the 2.0Tdi today.

I am using a vac pump to draw the oil out through the dip stick port.

    1. Cracked the filter and removed it from can to allow majority of oil to drain through to the sump.

    2. Inserted the vac tube into the dip stick port as far as it will go, which when checked is the same depth as the dip stick, but only got 1 litre of oil out.

I cannot imagine there has only been 1 litre of oil in the engine as there have been no warning, the dip stick shows oil and oil temp has been 87/90C.

    What am I missing.

the tube is getting stuck on something and not getting to the bottom of the sump.. try rotating it, pushing twizzling etc until it goes further. some engines you just cant use a sucker on. also, when the filter is out, stick the tube into the holes that goes down to the cooler and get what you can out of there.

Yes, no matter what I do I cannot get the sucker tube past the item which is at full dip stick depth. If feels springy but I am not going to push too hard.

I sucked everything out of the filter pot which is not much and then installed new filter and rings.

I am going to have to drain from the sump plug

Shame , it is the superior method when it works and surely they design it to be sucked out as the majority of dealers do it along with the extra ml from the oil cooler below the oil filter housing .

    Didn't experience a problem doing pops old B6 2.0 PD .

What diameter is the extractor tube ?

I always fit and forget , a magnetic sump plug .

I have now done it via the sump and drained off 4.5 litres.

The vac tube is about 5mm diameter, which is exactly the same as the end of the dip stick.

Before working the Passat I did my Yeti and it was fine. The vac tube went in about 30mm further than the dip stick. I drew 3.5 litres from it which is its capacity.

Just measured the tube and it is 5.8mm diameter and the unit is Sealey TP69.

Also, contrary to a number of YT videos, the drain plug IS right at the rear edge of the sump cover and it's a hex bolt. Some were saying that it was up further one side and thus left a small amount of old oil inside.

My last oil change was a diy/pumped job. 2013 c7 2.0 tdi I have. I was a bit short in that I got c4 litres out.. which was quite a bit more than you... I was kinda happy with this in that my next oil change will be at 10k miles interval and will be a full sump plug out/flush exercise ...

Think your attempt must have had a kinked/caught extraction pipe...perhaps because of a slight bend in it leading it to catch on something etc

I plan for every second 10k miles oil change as a diy pumped exercise....followed by a full plug out flush change etc

No the tube is not bent. I rotated it through 360 trying it at different positions but could feel something preventing full penetration. I am going to get a 5mm diameter tube and try it.

Both my vehicles are on long life service but I am still going to do a yearly oil change (normally 6K to 8k each) when it only costs £30 each. My 1.2 Yeti has a timing chain so that is a must.
