    Hi

i have recently bought a mk5 golf 2 tdi gt sport (140bhp) automatic dsg box. its a 2007 low mileage with all history and dsg service 10000miles ago.

when i took it out on the test drive it was perfect and no issues car looked good.... sincerely hope i haven't been had

i have had it for a few weeks now and no issues to begin with the occasionally the car would lose power. The engine would spin but no power to the wheels, there were no lights on the dash, when the engine was switched off and switched on it was fine again.

i have now realised that it happens when i put the car into sport mode and put my foot down..... it has once started working again without the engine been switched off and back on again by switching between sport and drive a couple of times.

has anyone had a similar or issues or can point me in the right direction of the correct post. i would really appreciate if you could give any information anything i can do to diagnose/ fix the problem.

    Thanks in advance

in a lot of cases this is caused by sticking turbo variable nozzles (VNT mechanism) and overboost. Some folks do a 'mr muscle' caustic clean but imho a replacement turbo is the best long term answer. You'd be best getting some diagnostics done to confirm, as it could be the turbo actuator solenoid ( N75 valve) or other sensor faults. there is loads of discussion about this VNT problem on this forum and all over web.

It is going into limp mode so first of all get it fault code read. If this shows the engine is suffering over boost then the turbo will have to be removed for a rebuild. Yes I imagine you have been had, the previous owner will have been told it needed a new/rebuilt turbo which was going to cost him £1K and he decided to make it someone else's problem, there are a lot of nice people like that around. Makes me fume on here when someone says they are going to get rid of the car because of a fault, bet you tell the person/dealer about the fault-not!

I know a few guys who've had to change turbos on the 2 litre engines at less than 100k, IIRC they are the KKK Borg Warner, whereas the 1.9 has the Garret (maybe the Garret seems more reliable longer term).

The BKD uses a Garrett turbo, it is the later DPF cars that have a Borg Warner unit, a BV39a branded KKK, BorgWarner don't like the name KKK, they call it 3K.

I still need to get diagnostics done... would you recommend replacing like for like? if it is the issue? the car is only at 55k seems low for turbo issues. do you know where i could get one from. i would fit myself assuming i don't need to reprogramme it afterwards.

my shuttle had limp mode problem, all diagnostics pointed to turbo(over boost) all mechanics said new turbo (only done 25k) found out the problem was exhaust manifold cracked around the welds . fitted old type cast iron manifold from manufacturer in Birmingham as the vw steel type are substandard and only guaranteed 1 year. VW won't admit the problem.

The manifold on these is cast iron and an integral part of the turbo.
