Certainly the cam timing is slightly out, the VW specialist should have spotted that, they sound a little lackadaisical in their attitude.

Tell me about it crasher I'm the one telling them what the issue is and they have not got a clue I asked them what should the timing settings be they did not know they say they have never had / seen this issue before ffs my reply was get onto google and you will see lol I'm going to get the belt replaced because it's due anyway and piece of mind which in theory should bring the timing back in if not adjust it myself and see what happens if it still does it the cam shaft must be worn in that case I will run it into the ground I just need to find out what the timings should be 100% I've seen so many on the forums

It only needs pegging and plating. Make sure whoever does the belt has said peg and plate because it is no use doing Tipex and pray if the setting is out already.

That's why I'd check the camshaft before shelling out on a new belt kit. if the shaft is goosed just run it into the ground and save the money you'd have spent on the belt.

Thanks for that rob I'm going to check them tomorrow if worn do as you say and run it into the ground the belt is booked in for next week just to save the space I can cancel tomorrow after I've checked the lobes.Crasher I spoke to the garage and they said they use the correct tools for replacing the belts what I'm finding hard to believe is they have never had an issue like this before and rubbishing what I'm saying they have been going over 30 years I'm guessing others must live with the constant twitching 😳I don't suppose you guys know where I can find out what these settings need to be I don't suppose vw will offer this information out willy nilly

depends who you spoke to on the day - they may have been going 30 years but the guy you spoke to might have only been going 6 months !! If the owner of 30 years told you this info then I'd back away form that place, might have just spent the last 30 years changing oil filters and brake pads.

Thank you rob and crusher for your valued assistance on this without you both I would be throwing money all over trying to get to the bottom of this issue my next move is check the lobes if all good then get a cam belt on they have assured me they use the correct locking tools and for 350 all in I thought was not bad then I will check my cam positions with vag com and make small adjustments I will then feed back my findings for others the place that will do the belt change are

It is nearly impossible to tell if there is a lifter problem from fondling the lobes, I have seen a good looking lobe running on a lifter with a hole through it, only removing the cam can show the wear. Setting the cam timing using the torsion value MVB is my idea of doing penitance for a misdemeanour.
