    Greetings all!

    We've got a 3.0 TDI A5 (245), Auto, Quattro (2011).

In the last few months it's started making a strange harmonic sound, matched to the engine revs (even in idle). Initially it was only when the engine was cold, but now seems mostly constant.

It went to the local garage, they thought it was a blowing exhaust, did an exhaust pressure test - which was fine. They said 'leave it for a bit, see what happens'.

Then it went to an Audi dealer, who did some diagnostics (all fine), then decided that the exhaust was wonky and vibrating, loosened all the hangers to let it settle. This did not fix it either!

I'm thinking it's most likely a gearbox/transmission issue - I think this model quite often has problems? Maybe catching the problem early could avoid worse problems.

So please can anyone recommend a gearbox specialist in the south Manchester or Cheshire area?

    Many thanks
    -Mat

I've made a recording of the sound, it's a sort of low ringing sound - you can hear it fairly well about 20 second in:

timing chain ? does sound more top endy, but always hard to tell from a video. use a length of hose, garden hose is fine, one end in lug hole, point other end around engine to see if you can pinpoint it.

Thanks Zollaf, I tried the trick with the hose - I'm not certain but it does sound like it's coming from the forward area of the engine. It seems quieter further back, and from underneath. I guess my local garage could inspect the timing chain etc for damage?

    Cheers
