As we both know a good old B5.5 Passat is very well supported for new and second hand parts, which can make all the difference when running a older car on a shoestring budget.

Another thing to consider about a VAG car of the mid/late 90's to mid 00's era is that they do not rust. VAG hit the sweet spot with build quality during that time, the newer stuff is not nearly as good.

But as with any older car, there WILL be niggles.

Ok, v6 tdi is out then.
What's the issue with the 2.0? Assuming this is pre CR 2.0?

Seen this close to me but it's 2.0

Doh, still, wondering why to avoid the 2.0 tdi?

I'm not averse to petrol, just don't want a real high fuel bill.
I've had a 4.0v8 with LPG that cost the same to fuel as my wife's 2.0 diesel Peugeot at the time.

It would have to be a bigger car to consider a saloon instead of estate, like this

you said you want a cheap and reliable car, an a8 is not a cheap and reliable car , even with lpg. an a4 or passat, (basically the same beasts) with a 1.9tdi and prior to 2002 and cheap and reliable.
a 2.0tdi is post 2004 and they are not reliable, injector faults, oil pump faults, and the cars they are fitted to can be a nightmare. one for sub 2k is going to be a project or hiding faults. get what we are telling you to get and be happy. yes its old and not going to impress the neighbours, in fact they will wonder why you have bought such and old car and maybe stop talking to you, but their 150 quid a month nissan juke will cost more to keep going long term. get a quattro as well, then you can have fun in the snow...

I like the shape of the B5, and I'm fine with the older car, I was think about the A8 because it was the other car in the frame when I bought my LS400 the V8 that I lpg'd, the Lexus was all cheap Toyota pars and i 40k it only needed a brake caliper.
Is the Quattro reliable then? Is it the Haldex system on the B5?

quattro is a torsen centre diff, like a wood burning stove really, plain simplicity. with vag, if the engine points front to back its torsen, if its sideways then its got a haldex. i dont like haldex but i do like torsen, its just gears, clever spiral gears that put the power to the axle with the most grip, like a normal diff but much more cleverer. an a8 is an electronics nightmare.. loverly cars, but when they go wrong you need different skills to most mechanics to be able to fix them, and deeeeeeeeep pockets. the humble b5, 5.5 or passat is just plain simplicity.

So the Passat and the A4 are basically the same in the B5 platform? Seems the Passat body is a little larger though. Is the same kit in the A6 of the same era?
Space (especially back seat width) is important with 3 kids
