Hi, this is my first post on a forum and I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem on my wife's Golf. It's a Mk5 TDI with 108k on the clock, it's been serviced regularly and it has the timing belt / water pump changed at 80k. Yesterday when the car we sat at idle a screeching noise was coming from under the bonnet, on inspection I could see that it was coming from the serpentine belt area. As it's a bank holiday weekend and no garages are open we would have to wait until
next week to book it in. Later on that day when the car was again sat at idle the car made 1 loud noise and then he engine cut out completely and is unable to restart. I opened the bonnet and there was a slight smell of burning in the serpentine belt area but the belt is still attached to the pulleys. I'm a novice when it comes to what's under the bonnet and I cannot pinpoint the defective area. The only signs under the bonnet are a few tiny sheered metal fragments. I cannot see where they come from. The car will be going to a garage next week but it would be great if someone could tell me what could be up with it?

    thanks in advance

the timing belt is right behind where the serpentine belt is, so my guess is the timing belt has failed. the screeching was possibly the water pump or tensioner giving you a warning it was about to let go.

Hopefully that is just a seized air con compressor, disconnecting the poly v belt will prove it.

An issue on the driveline wouldn't cause a non start (save an excessively tight pulley such that the starter cannot cope). I'd pop the timing cover off and have a look at the toothed belt.

Hi, I just whipped off the cover for the timing belt and it looks fine, still attached and looking solid. Still nothing stands out to my inexperienced eye that could cause the problem. I don't want to try and start the car incase I cause further damage.

I've checked the timing belt by removing the cover and it's still attached and looks good to me.

If the AC compressor is knackered will that turn the engine off and unable to restart?

If the engine was not going fast enough to snap the safety coupling then yes, it will stop the engine dead and prevent it turning over.
