    Hi Shabazmo

i know you have a love of tools so how about treating yourself to an induction heater tool sounds just the job for this sort of thing and they work a treat. You can get them for about 500 and with all the servicing and repairs you do yourself I'm sure it would come in handy.
    good luck with it.

    regards goodeone

I've got one of them and they are great, but induction only works with metals that have iron / steel in them. So if the bolt genuinely is aluminium or some sort of alloy then the induction heating tool will be useless. Still a great tool though, but might be useless in this scenario.

Well Benten, you've ruined it for me as I thought I had the justification to buy an induction tool . Anyhow, I called a few Audi specialists in the area to find out if they had any experience with this problem, and whilst they all said that they should be able to fix it, when I question on whether they had seen this before, they could not confirm this, so I did not take it any further. I then came across a company called Thread Doctor who specialises in removing stubborn or broken bolts, injectors etc. He said that he has fixed this problem 3 times at 3 different Audi dealers, but they had to take the gearbox out and on each occasion, the threads were stripped, hence his specialist skill. One of the dealers was my local one. I called them and spoke to their foreman and he said that it was not a problem and they could do it as part of the oil change. When I asked how confident they were. I got a very confident answer. So for an oil change, c. 200, this was a no brainer because if I were to mess it up, it would cost a fortune. I have therefore booked the cat in for the first week of May.

I will update you when I get the car back.

Ok Zollaf, you really know how to make someone feel good. I found this tool so will give it a try. The T55 extractor should work. Lets hope the aluminium threads don't strip.

You said above that you booked the car into Audi to do it so if it strips it's their issue....why have you gone and bought extractors to try it yourself?

First and foremost, I dont have a torx extractor set, so I want one anyway, as Goodeone says, I just love tools. Secondly, I may just have another look at the weekend and see how much courage I have. I somehow like taking risks, but this could be expensive. Lets see.

Get the gearbox warmed up first, and then apply some gentle heat around the bolt. it does wonders for seized bolts
