From what I can tell the load cover spool is only using gravity to stay sat in situ – it just lifts out – you do not even have to use the release clip.

When the load cover is in use and then you run it up the side runners to move it out of the way, this then is enough to
dislodge the mail reel unit from behind the rear seats and under the tension winds itself up towards the rear door.

I have checked the side location pins which can retract for removal (although you do not need to retract them to remove the reel) and they appear to be fully extended. The problem seems to be that the pins don't quite extend far enough to locate fully in the side panel holes.

I my old Passat that I just moved from, the load cover was locked in situ and couldn't be pulled out unless you used the release switch.

    Anyone else encountered this problem?

(I did find an old thread from 2009
which sounded like the same issue but they had found no fix)

Check it is the correct part number for your car. It may have been replaced with the wrong one by the previous owner. (

@LukenKarl Annoyingly there is no sticker on it (like I've seen many have on eBay) so I'm in the dark as to it's part number – although it looks the same as the ones on eBay that say they are for my model. I think I'll have to pop into Audi and as them if they know what the problem / if it's the correct load cover.

Incase anyone else has this problem, I have solved it with a bit of black Sugru. One the drivers side I have built up the sides of the two little indents that the location pins from the cover lock into. The cover now stays in place and doesn't pop out. You now need to use the switch to retract them in order to take the cover out.
