A4 1.8 SE speedo/instrument cluster probs - advice please?

Hello all

Help needed for a non-techie!

My instrument cluster (speedo, rev counter and led display) is not in good health. Speedo unreliable and inaccurate, although rev counter works OK. Led display comes on inermittently but is patchy when it is on so clearly on its way out. From time to time the whole thing shuts down and dials go to zero before coming back on a few seconds later.

It's an old car (1999) so not worth a replacement unit but I like the car so would love to get it sorted (mot next month too). I have the code from the current cluster (8d0-919-930n) and have been looking on ebay for a while now but have never seen that precise reference. Does anyone know if I could use another one providing it's the same moder/year?

Alternatively can they be repaired? Has anyone got any experience?

I have a cluster with the same number but an H at the end. I'll be putting it on eBay soon. I swapped it for one with an NX at the end and it worked perfectly.

Do you have VCDS lite for recoding the keys?

Yes. It was an a4 1999 2.8 Quattro. You need to program the keys to "know" the new cluster otherwise the immobiliser won't work. Either get an auto electrician to do it (£100) or buy a cheap Vag com cable and download and register the vcds lite software and do it yourself. I did. Not too hard!!
