Hi, just replaced a broken spring on my son's 1.9tdi. Problem is when putting it back together I can't get the driveshaft back into the hub, is there a master spline on the shaft? No sign of any damage to the splines on the driveshaft. Doing my nut in trying to get it to slip in

It will go in just needs some gentle persuasion,

Put some grease on the shaft spline and hub splines, the line up both spline hole and gentle force it back

Check the hub splines carefully for rags where you've already tried to get it in and consider cleaning them with fine emery or wet n dry paper and a small file, same on the shaft splines.

Possible but unlikely, the c.v joint is designed to work in all angles the most likely cause is rust or damaged splines, as "rob69" mentioned try to rub those down so the surface has no Rust etc.

Then apply some copper grease, cv grease or I have even use petroleum jelly to get me out of bother before.

Just make sure the splines line up with the hub,
sometimes a jack under the lower arm (wishbone) to raise the hub up will help it go in easier too but just keeep an eye on the jack stands if you do this as if you jack the wishbone up too much it tends to lift of the stands.

Thanks for the advice guys. Gave end of splines a wee rub with the wifes nail file, a bit of grease and a wee tap with a rubber mallet and hey presto in it went.

When all back together it was sitting high on that side so I checked the other side to find the other spring is broken too, damn. Outer cv boot is leaking too so would've had to strip that side at some point anyway. Any tips on how to remove the outer cv joint to fit a new boot? Can it be done with the shaft still in the car?

Universal Split CV Boot Kit Bailcast Stickyboot Easy Driveshaft Gaiter Repair | eBay

Check this out may work a treat.

Otherwise cut the old boot of and tap the outer cv joint off with a punch or wood and hammer, the only thing doing it this way is that sometimes it will pop of but on the rare occasions it's a mare. There is a specialist tool which I have but not worth the money if it's a one off job.

The cv joint is held on by a inner C clip.

I reckon your best bet is something like the eBay job, just make sure you cake the cv joint in grease before you install it

I haven't seen one of those split gaiters for donkeys! I always thought they were a quick fix to get it through an MOT rather than a permanent repair.
Since you're taking the drive shaft out the hub anyway to get the strut out I'd be inclined to fit a full boot rather than a splitty.

Split boots are a bodge. The CV joint is very tight on the shaft and often we have to remove the shaft, put it in the vice and "persuade" it to come off. We have tools that go through the centre of the joint to press it off but these usually snap or get jammed and won't come back out without ripping the CV thread. Sometimes they are so bad that ones with a bolt rather than a nut have to be put in the press and a steel rod pressed through the hole into the joint onto the end of the shaft and pressed at 10 tonnes with the joint supported in the press. It is worth knowing that the bolt must be replaced (these come in SOME kits) and that there are two different styles of bolt with different torque procedures, with face ribs 70Nm+90 degrees and without ribs 200Nm+180 degrees, and yes that last one is hard work! The OE plastic boots require special clip crush pliers able to set the clamp at the specific compression torque of 25Nm, too much will split the boot and too little makes it leak.

Never ever used the split boot always done as you say and I haven't seen one used, but my neighbor has nothing other than good stuff to say about it.....
