Any advice welcome as I'm at the end of my tether with my car!

My car had a sudden flat battery - probably because it wasn't used enough over a 2 week period (only a few 1 mile drives) - and since getting the car going again I've had nothing but problems. Had to charge the battery as jump start didn't work.

Firstly, the wipers, horn, indicators, main beam wouldn't work and the traction control and steering wheel light (on amber) stayed lit on the dash. Steering felt little bit heavier but not much at all.

Garage replaced the steering control module - wipers, horn etc worked thereafter.

The garage also said the steering rack needed replacing so that was done. When I picked the car up the steering wheel and traction warning lights were still on. But now the abs light was also on. I was told that these would reset and turn off after driving for a bit. 24 miles later.... lights were still on!

Garage claimed the replacement rack must have been faulty so claim your have fitted another. However, the situation is now even worse! After trying to reprogramme the system/reset electrics they told me their software wouldn't do it..... the car now constantly beeps when the ignition is on, the abs, steering and traction warning lights are on and the steering is very heavy. The handbrake light flashes and the tyre pressure light is also on!! The garage told me the electrics just need to be reset by vw.....

    Does this sound right?

Oh, to add to the confusion my car doesn't even have a tyre pressure sensor enabled so I don't know why that warning light would even come on.

The garage have said they can do no more so the car is currently with someone else.... he called me today and said diagnostics aren't very helpful at all and he doesn't know what the problem is either.

    Any advice much appreciated!

It all needs setting up and coding correctly. It's a bit of a faff even when you set it up with dealer diagnostic equipment in a dealership. Fingers crossed that they have used the correct rack.

Vw said they won't deal with it as they didn't fit the part and the rack is a second hand vw part....

It's with one now (vw/audi specialist since 1978!) but he doesn't know what the problem is either.

I would like to presume that the voltage is ok when running and standstill. I've had a freaked out dash with warnings due to low battery voltage, although yours does sound more serious.

I had a similar problem with my Seat Ibiza. Battery went flat as it was sat for a while. I charged the battery and on starting it up the Steering, ABS and airbag stayed on. Took it to the garage and they gave me a list of about £700 of work that needed doing.
I replaced the battery with a brand new one and all the lights went off and that solved the problem. It must have been some electrical fault. It might be worth buying a brand new battery and seeing if that sorts it.
    Good luck!!!!!1

With this platform, the PQ35, I have often been unable to get the electrical problems sorted out with VCDS (AVG-COM) and I had to resort to the dealer system VAS-PC but now I use ODIS like the main dealer and this takes the fault codes and tells you what to do, Guided Fault Finding. It doesn't always get it right, last week it told me to change a turbo capsule and it was a jammed EGR valve but it does get you closer and sometimes will even delete odd codes such as one I had on the left rear door of a Golf 5 R32, VCDS would not clear it but VAS-PC did. Your steering is completely electric and there are many safety systems, fitting a used (or even "recon") electric rack is always asking for trouble, having been through this ****, all we will now fit is the Bosch supplied ZF Lenk Systems exchange units now available from Bosch dealers. On an early car like this it may have Gen1 or Gen 2 steering and in both cases you have to convert to Gen3 which requires some conversion parts and a wiring harness.
