Golf 1998 1.6 petrol - did timing belt change (driver side engine mount was removed, engine was jiggled up and down to get the mount out). All back together but now I've noticed that there is a lot of on-off rotational noise coming from the driveshaft area when driving. Sounds like a heavy rubbing noise, frequency increases with speed, present in steering wheel straight ahead position. Present on both sides - I've jacked each front wheel independently to check. And the noise is there with the wheel jacked, so not wheel bearings, in fact the noise (roughly) seems to come from the inboard cv/diff area.

I'm fairly sure this wasnt there before I did this job (but as I'd only driven the car around the drive, not 100% sure), so is there anything obvious that might have happened during the process of jiggling the engine around to remove the engine mount, eg driveshafts partly disengaging, that might explain any of this?

    Hello mate,

I did my cam belt two weeks ago on my 1.9 GT TDI. Exact same problem as you're describing.

Turned out mine needed a new engine mount. The old ones are fine until they get messed about with. Quite common apparently.

    Here's my old mount.
