    Hi All,

My Mk5 GTi is wearing the inner edge of its rear tyres. The problem in the lower suspension arm concentric bush/adjuster has seized.
Local tyre depot has told me the arms have to be replaced!
Is this right, or can the bushes/adjuster be replaced, if so does anyone know where I can order them?

    Thanks

    Allen

Those bolts are always seized solid, we cut the bolt either side of the bush don the side of the subframe as heating both traditional hot spanner and inductive versions don't work. Usually we then replace the bush with the VW Golf MK5 1K (03-09) Powerflex Rear Lower Link Inner Bushes PFR85-512 | eBay EVEN if we fit new arms as the original is incapable of holding the rear camber but in cost sensitive applications we fit new Febi lower arms OR if money is really tight, just Febi bushes as VW don't sell them.

This is a 4 Motion but the parts are the same

I've been looking into this upgrade as I intend to fit it and from the pictures you've posted I think the bush you've referenced should be (according to Powerflex diagram) PFR85-10 - REAR AXLE LOWER SUSPENSION ARM INNER BUSH, could you check and confirm please Crasher.

There are lots of bushings in the rear suspension, Is this the most important to change to poly?

This in my opinion is THE bush that is the main cause of the problems this rear end suffers from but there is nothing wrong with doing all rubber, just the lower inner in poly or all in polly, the critical point is it being set up correctly. We ask our alignment centre to set the camber on the high side of the tolerance with rubber bushes or with poly inners, insist it is dead on and then set the toe to spec, this seems to cure the problem. I did have one customers Golf 6 TDI pound its new Uniroyal RS3's to death in about 5k miles after doing just the lower inners which was odd. We had the alignment re-done as it had gone negative and toe out, fitted two new tyres and now we are monitoring it which is quite easy as she lives on the road behind the workshop.. Yesterday I did the cam belt on a customers 2005 GTI and he is quite into this car previously having had me do an APR stage 2 with cast downpipe and he is now looking at having the complete rear end rebuild we do with all Powerflex bushes, all arms and subframe powder-coated, new Suplex springs and Koni Active dampers all round and the rear floor de-rusted and treated which is about £4k of work.

Just taken the sump off another Golf 5 GTI which has no oil pressure and destroyed the fuel pump tappet and fuel pump, the balancer shaft chain sprocket centre bolt has snapped, going to patch it back up and see what it sounds like...

Stick to rubber bushing, the Golf MK5 has wonderful ride, you don't want to ruin it.

Alignment of a new void bush

Hey Crasher, interesting thread, every bushing on the rear of my 2008 GT140 with 130k miles on it, is worn / perished and all have play with a pry bar, I've also had it wear the inner side of my rear tyres.

I'm planning on replacing all the bushings / arms in one go, I was going to replace all the small arms with new replacement arms complete with bushings already installed as the complete arms are cheap enough, however I was planning on re-using the main big lower arm and just press out / in a new bushing as I thought it'd be a bit of a waste to just throw that big arm in the bin and also because these arms are more expensive.

However, I notice you say above that you've experienced these big lower arms to be incapable of holding camber,,, why is this, was the arm damaged or did it get damaged removing / installing the bushing?

    Appreciate your input.

The lower arm inner bushing is too small and soft and does not last long enough so we replace them with VW Golf MK5 (03-09) Powerflex Rear Lower Spring Mounts Inner PFR85-510 5055676510990 | eBay in most situations, even with new arms we push out the bush and fit Powerflex.
