Hello I have looked all over the internet for this answer, I have phoned around garages and even Audi however they don't want to give a definitive answer over the phone. Before I take my car to a garage and have it assesed I was hoping someone could answer my question please.

My car is a 58 reg 2009 year, it's just ticked over 100,000 miles. 2.7 tdi v6 engine, automatic.

If you need any more details please let me know.

    Regards.

Update I had my Audi serviced today (not by Audi) and the mechanics under a quick engine inspection didn't want to give an answer as to whether it was belt or chain as it was covered by a plastic cover??

chains, many of them, like snakes, conveniently located at the rear of the engine thus requiring either engine or gearbox removal to get to them.

Thankyou for the fast reply. Definitely a chain and not belt? And when would I need to replace it? When it starts to make a rattle sound upon start up?

Luckily I haven't got a ticking noise. Just a severe case of paranoia after my friends Cambelt snapped and destroyed his engine.

Will I be able to view the chains in the engine bay with a torch?

yes, if you remove the gearbox and flywheel first, or better still, take the engine out. they are at the back of the engine, between engine and gearbox. not an easy job to change them or even see them. you can take the cam covers off and look at the tops of them, but thats a bit pointless really.

Thankyou for your help. Prior to this post in my search. I found that there is a belt for the high pressure pump and an aux belt, if this gets forgotten about and not replaced will it cause big issues? Or should I get it replaced? Is there pre warning for replacement.

If the pump belt fails I think it will just cut out and obviously will need replacing then but there is likely to be no damage to the valves. I say likely as I'm yet to come across one with the pump belt gone.
