    Hi All.

Some advice, about a 3 weeks ago my steering starting to make a whirring noise, but only on full lock or close to full lock. Doesn't make any noise when stationary and putting full lock on. When you get to 90% full lock or full lock you can hear a whirring noise, like a motor somewhere. Does it on reverse, and doesn't matter if its full lock left or right. Steering weight hasn't changed, no wobble in the steering wheel, no vibrations

All suspension has been checked, tyres checked for rubbing or any noticeable signs of rubbing, nothing. CV boots are fine.

It did it for a week and then stopped, but today it starting doing it again, noticeable when crawling or driving very slowly.

Is there any way of checking the power steering, as its electronic, using vcds? Any ideas what it could be. Cars a 58plate with 150k miles. 2.0 tdi.

    Thanks

Autoscan first. Any faults? Then use your Measuring Blocks.
Latest versions of VCDS give what should be expected in a balloon
(from memory, havn't been into the VCDS steering in years)

But sounds like you've a mechanical symptom that isn't causing an error
And that means checking the drive train both sides from inner drive shaft through inner CV joints to outer CV joints on a ramp at the 90% of full lock you experience it on the road.

This might show up on the ramp with the suspension not tensioned -- but that'd be the only difference between road and ramp

If nothing found then it'd be suspension components moving at that point -- first see whether your sub-frame's showing signs of movement with any clean metal areas around the sub-frame bolt heads?

    Guessing now...

Erm you sure about that? its fully electronic (so I believe) thus no power steering fluid needed, or am I wrong?? I did look for areservoir but couldn't find one, unless its buried deep in the engine.

Thanks for the pointers Richardsel, will ask the mechanic to do as you suggested, what measuring blocks should I be looking at...

Measuring Blocks in Module 44. But as you've not got the red steering wheel warning icon showing on your dash,
doubt you've got an electronic control fault
