    UPDATE:
Did DSG basic settings on Monday night all went very well.
Car drove very well indeed all week so far.
This evening though on the way home from work got the flashing PRNDS again, four times, and car lost all drive each time.
first time, knocking the shifter sideways to tip restored drive, car went back into 3rd gear.
second time, while i was stopped at traffic lights, putting it into P then back into D worked.
third time, whilst driving, neither of the above worked, obviously i stopped before putting the car into P and back to D, the engine warning light came on this time also.
tried stopping the engine and removing the key, but the car wouldnt release the key, on the third or fourth attempt (turning the key back and forth in the ignition) it gave up the key.
I had to scan and clear the fault codes in order to be able to get the car home.
The fourth time, a knock sideways to tip restored drive again.

    codes below:
    Code:
28775 - No Communication with Gear Selector Module
                U0103 - 000 - - Intermittent - MIL ON
                 Freeze Frame:
                        Fault Status: 10100000
                        Fault Priority: 0
                        Fault Frequency: 255
                        Reset counter: 40
                        Mileage: 146276 km
                        Time Indication: 0

00194 - Ignition Key Removal Lock
                008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
                 Freeze Frame:
                        Fault Status: 00101000
                        Fault Priority: 0
                        Fault Frequency: 255
                        Reset counter: 1
                        Mileage: 146277 km
                        Time Indication: 0
Any ideas? can of petrol and a match are coming to my mind!!

Looks even more like j587. If it does not know it is park then it won't send a signal to ignition switch to release the key.

Another thought, (I clearly have too much time on my hands) but could a bad ground/earth connection cause this behaviour?

It's possible. Any more than 0.3 volts on the earth should be considered a bad earth.

Still THINK it's the selector though.

Thanks FLAPPERJACK, with the help of my friend i've just inspected and cleaned the earth connections around/under the battery shelf and from the gearbox/engine mount.
While doing this we noticed a wet mark around the socket where the wiring loom connects to the gearbox/mechatronics, we unplugged the cable and found oil in the socket.
We gave this a cleanout with a good spray of electrical contact cleaner and a shot of air to help it dry..

I found this while i was googling to see if this is normal... DSG Leak at Electrical Connector - TDIClub Forums

I've driven the car home and it has behaved.. so far, i wonder if this is the root cause??
I also note that nobody has commented on a fix for this either

I'm hoping its nothing too expensive!!

That's not good. The mechatronics comes immersed in its own oil. It's not fillable.

I thought it got its oil from the gearbox?
