Hi all. I've just bought a mk7 Golf MY2014 with Discovery Media 5.8" screen. I'm trying to connect a portable USB Hard Drive (Western Digital "My Passport" 500GB). However, it doesn't get recognised by the system, even though it spins up without any issue. A USB stick works without any problem, but I'd prefer to have the extra space of the HDD in order to put all my music on it. Both are formatted as FAT32 and have the same subset of files on them currently.

I've read in various places that people have used portable USB Hard Drives without any problem. I'm wondering what make and model people have used successfully, especially if someone has successfully used the same model I have?

    Thanks in advance ...

Hi there, to be honest this is a common problem with any USB input car stereo, as there is so much variation in the power that the USB ports provide, and it is VERY marginal on a lot of hard drives. I can't see anybody guaranteeing that their hard drive will work with your system. For example, I had a 1.5TB WD drive attached to my A5 AMI unit and it worked faultlessly for 3 years (until some numpty hit the car), but on transferring the drive to an A6 (identical AMI unit) it wouldn't work reliably (would work for 10 minutes, then come up with error saying unit not found) - it also won't work in my new A6 AllRoad with 3G+ AMI unit, I've ended up using a 128GB USB Pen drive now (which can be bought for about £30). It's worth noting that it doesn't matter in the car whether its USB 2 or USB 3 as the read speed on USB2 is plenty fast enough - it just takes longer to transfer the files to it in the first place. I then split the files on the 1.5TB drive into 128GB chunks. Let's face it, with the best will in the world with 128GB of music (even in FLAC format) it's going to take a lot of travelling to listen to it

I've managed to get a solution working. I bought a Spyker USB 2 external enclosure for 2.5" SATA Hard Drive for £10 from Amazon, and put a spare 1TB drive I had in it. Formatted as fat32 and copied all my music onto it in AAC (m4a) format. The car recognises it no problem, and the music appears to play without issue.

I'm going on a long 2 hour drive tomorrow, so we'll see if it works flawlessly for the entire journey!
