I noticed a water trap while washing my car.

When the boot is open, look under the rubber seals around the hinges. Where I bought my car used I was shocked to see just how much dirt had built up under it.

Looks like it could cause problems in later years if not looked after.

Yeah, I've already seen a few leaking into the boot through the hinges. There are drain tubes behind the boot trims that are going to get clogged. I've also had one leaking through the door panels. I couldn't believe that the doors on the new Passats are sealed in the same way as the old model and the MK 4 Golf after all the water leak problems those cars had. They have addressed this problem on the MK 5 Golfs, so why not the Passat?

    Regards - Jim.

I have just got a 56 plate 140 sport tdi saloon. After I bought it and drove 300 miles home (in the lashing rain) I noticed water under the spare wheel.

So you think this is coming in at the hinges? If so do you know how to fix it? I have dried it off as no idea how long it had been there and will check next time it is wet. Being Scottish that might be a while

Sorry to hear about your water leak...welcome to the world of VW.
First thing I'd do is ensure that the drain tubes behind the boot trims haven't come adrift.
If you look at the rubber seals around the boot hinge tube, you'll see there is a little hole on it. A rubber tube connects to that hole inside the boot and routes to a hole on the boot floor near the rear lamp units. Make sure the hole isn't blocked first then remove the boot trims and check that the rubber tube is still attached at each end. Also, make sure the tubes aren't kinked or twisted.

    Jim.

    Wierd!!

Driving in the heavy rain on Saturday, then it stopped and I went through a foam wash - more water, I did not get home until after dark. Yesterday I was off early and by lunchtime car was filthy again so I gave it a quick once over with a sponge and hose. Afterwards I thought that after a couple of days of mucho water that the boot would be soaked so went to dry it off then go about looking at the pipes like you mentioned but when I opened it there was nothing at all, absolutely bone dry.

As I said before I just bought the car so the initial water could be a spillage or maybe rain with if the boot had been left open or whatever. Maybe there is nothing wrong!, will just have to keep an eye on it but certainly it took a blasting at the weekend and nothing. Here is hoping.

P.S. Ref "welcome to the VW world" I may have just bought this one but also have a Polo twist (up for sale now that I have the Passat) and a 150bhp Golf TDI PD. The Golf was mine and the Polo hers so I am gutted that with the wife now in the Golf that she actually has a faster car than me! Got to say that (touch wood) the Golf which is an 04 and bought 2.5 years ago with 25k on it and the Polo Twist which we have had from new have given me very little trouble although the rear drum brakes in the Polo have been an ongoing saga. Pretty happy with the Vdubs. Would probably have had an A6 rather than the Passat but value for money you get much more.

P.P.S. The Polo Twist is diamond black, 35k, March 05, 6 months tax and 12 month MOT, alloys, air con and we have it up for 4400ono if anyone is reading this and facies a car for their daughter, missus, mistress, love child.....
