I watched the OBD and dash climb steadily in unison.
Channel 51 on the climate control readout is totally out though - it shows 127 when the dash and OBD show almost 90.

Can someone please confirm that channel 51 is the correct one to use and that their CC diagnostics mode matches (or at least, resembles) the dash gauge?

    Thanks
But which ECU did you log into? Engine or instruments? You need to log into both and compare readings. The gauge on the dash is very approximate, damped and weighted to stay at 90 degrees over quite a large temperature variation. The diagnostics will show the exact temperature if the sensors are working fine.

Ah. With a generic scanner, is there an option? I certainly couldn't see the option on mine.

This is why I always say get a full registered VCDS! They work properly at every level that is possible with diagnostics. I't s best tool you will ever buy if serious about maintaining your car.
What is channel 51, and on what are you reading the figures? 127 degrees sounds like the refrigerant gas max temperature after leaving the compressor before it enters the condenser radiator.
On VCDS, auto HVAC is address 08. All temperatures etc are within the 'measuring blocks' after logging into 08

20 minutes is still a very long time to reach operating temeprature, I've heard and read that non genuine thermostats can give poor results. I was surprised that my old stat seemed to behave as expected in a pan of hot water but a new genuine stat drastically improved warm up times and running temperature. i can only think the original stat had got sluggish with age.
