I've been asked to remove and replace the turbo on a 2008 2.0tdi 170 Passat. I haven't looked underneath yet, but if it's as tight on space as the top, will I need to remove the engine to get the turbo off?

According to Haynes (!) you don't have to remove the engine, although you will have to tilt it to drop the turbo out.

Are you doing this on a ramp or on axle stands? It's not to bad on a ramp. Wouldn't want to do it on axle stands.
You can leave the engine exactly where it is . Remove the downpipe (or dpf if you have one) I take the osf driveshaft out as it gives you more room and only takes a few minutes. Give every nut a good spray as you don't want any studs snapping.

Mine needed the subframe at the front dropping to get it out (2010 cbab) according to the place that did it.

I didn't know there was a subframe so interpret this as you will!

Yep you can take the subframe out and steering rack with it if want. Makes it easier.

That's exactly what they said they did - forgot the steering rack bit.

Battery out.air box out. Then diconnect one live on the e-box. One earth cable on the nsf chassis leg one multi plug. Take out the column to rack pinch bolt. Then remove the bottom link rod nuts. 2 exhaust bolts on back of subframe. 6 balljoint nuts. 6 subframe bolts and it all comes down. Oh and disconnect wiring to oil sensor.

Turbo out and rebuilt one in it's place. No need to remove the subframe, just the O/S drive shaft and unbolt the Dpf. Turn DPF 180 degrees and pull it through the tunnel. This leaves plenty of space to unbolt the turbo

I had a new turbo in my 170 B6 about 6 months ago, they did it on a ramp, one day in garage, job done.
07 3C B6 Passat SEL DSG 170, Eibach lowering springs, replaced dash from an 09 reg, R-Line kit, VW rns810 navigation system, reversing camera, 18" turbine alloys, rust developing in various places...

Right, a nice reconditioned turbo has been fitted, the Dpf has been cleaned, so has the turbo oil supply/return pipes, the egr has also been cleaned. It has no engine warning light on and it passed it's MOT yesterday morning with no advisories, so why is there so little power????
Driving around town is a bit slow, but it's manageable. Boot it and it goes into limp mode with engine management light and flashing glowplug light illuminating. Turn engine off, restart and lights are gone and it's out of limp mode.
The first test drive after fitting the turbo wasn't too far, as the pipe from the intercooler to the egr popped off at the egr. I put it back on, then the inlet pipe to the intercooler popped off. That was put on, then the outlet pipe from the intercooler popped off. So I fitted all pipe joints with jubilee clips. I've now noticed an oil leak from the turbo outlet to intercooler pipe. ( the only pipe without a jubilee clip). My thought at the moment is that the full whack of air from the turbo isn't getting into the engine. Instead it's building up in the pipe work to the egr/manifold, then breaking the weakest joint as the pressure of the air increases.
Any ideas as to why the lack of power and might I be right about the air from the turbo not getting to the engine??
