I am new to this site so I hope I can find some guidance from members.
I have a 2003 TT Roadster which I have maintained myself for the past seven years.

Last week when leaving a car park at night I noticed my headlamps were not working, although there was no warning light on the dash (which there would have been for a blown bulb)

The dipped beam are regular halogen bulbs (Not HID).

I have changed the bulbs No difference.

I have checked the fuses (20 and 21) 15 Amp, both are fine.

I have checked the rotary light switch input and output voltage is OK.

I have checked the voltage across the fuse positions at 21 and 21 both read zero with the switch on the off position then read 13 and a bit volts when the switch is in position 2.

Finally I checked the voltage at the bulb holder and found it to be zero when lights are on.

Fog Lights work fine as do side lights.

Can anybody tell me where the fault could be as I would have thought that if the fuses were live the lights should work?

Is there a connection after the fuses that could have failed?

I had the dashpod repaired a few weeks ago, could that have dislodged something?

Please help as I am now confused.

    Many Thanks

    Lawrence

    UPDATE

Yesterday I unplugged the lighting harness from the back of the Nearside Headlamp (Easier to reach) to check if there was voltage at pin 10 (Dipped Beam) and hey presto the Offside Dipped Beam comes on! As does the headlight levelling motor! Checked out the bulb connections for dipped beam and found that the supply and earth were a little scorched, so soldered in new ones. Put it all back together and ....it doesn't work!!!! I'm now thinking that it could be a short circuit in the levelling motor affecting the whole dipped beam circuit.
Anybody heard of a dud motor affecting the lights?

Still confused but gradually getting there.

Not familiar with same, but it may be worth looking under dash to see if any connectors were disturbed
when dash was removed. I think the A3 has a yellow and a yellow / black for dipped beam (memory).

    Thanks Micheal
Checked all the connections yesterday and while I was doing so discovered a big relay numbered 393 which apparently controls all the lights, (after having been told that there are no relays on dipped beam) So went to my local Audi dealer and they wanted 98 for one, so going to try a second hand on off Amazon for 15 and see what happens.
    Fingers crossed.

    UPDATE

Changing the 393 Relay didn't work!!!!

    Thanks Micheal

checked all connections, it seems that something is getting lost after the relay, also noticed headlamp levelling motors have stopped working.

Nothing showing on VAGCOM and no bulb out warning on the DIS.

    Totally confused.

Could be a relay between switch and lamp holder. Not sure where it would be situated though.

    Hi Derekwoosy
Thanks for the idea, but have swapped the Relay (Lamp Control Unit) and no change.
However I unplugged the nearside lamp unit yesterday to see if there was voltage on the low beam circuit, and guess what... the nearside lamp starts to work as does the height adjustment motor.
So I'm now thinking that there is a short inside the headlight unit, either within the wiring or the levelling motor. There was twelve volts at pin 10 on the lamp unit plug!!, but when I plug it back in it all dies. Back to no low beam and no height adjuster.
Next job pull out the headlamp and check it out.

I am no expert ,but I would fit a temporary separate earth link from lamp to body or battery negative as a test
If you have 12v at lamp,it would seem to be missing the return circuit
The earth is normally the brown cable

    Hi Michael
I will check both as the lamp supply seems to be dead at the lamp connector but the pin 10 on the big lamp plug is live when I unplug it??? So I am thinking that there is something going wrong with the wiring inside the lamp unit.
I'm just trying to avoid having to remove the light unit as this involved taking off the front bumper!!!!!!
I will check the earth again though.
