    Hi all,
I need a replacement gearbox for my A6-C5. The existing one is a 6 speed, mated to an AVF 1.9 TDI engine. Ideally, I should get one from the same setup, but failing that, what other VAG gearboxes would fit and work correctly? Would a gearbox from a newer VAG vehicle ( Passat,Audi etc.) work? Also, where exactly is the gearbox type / Nr. code located? The existing box is working ( driving ) perfectly, but has developed a whine, so bearing(s) starting to go......is there a specific bearing(s) which is noted for going at the 150'000 miles mark? Main shaft? The noise level changes when changing up or down.
Thanks for any help you can give.
    Jim.

    AVF , Passat B5.5 , A4 B6 , A6 C5 are mated to the inferoir FRK it's a less reliable VW copy of an ELN Getrag .

Not all of them go bad , but then the BS of a so called 'life fluid' isn't doing them any favours either .

Hi Fishybusiness and Gazwould, Thanks for your replies. It was the location of the Nr on the box I was after Fishybusiness, but I forgot to mention "Location" so it was not clear...... sorry about that. But while we are on the subject now, whereabouts on the box is it located? If I get underneath the car, can it be seen from that position? or is it on the top or sides etc?
So if I can source a 6sp from any veh with AVF engine , or any Passat B5.5 , A4 B6 , A6 C5 even with other Engine Nrs, I should be OK? Or is it a case of AVF only, and nothing else will work? Which VAG Vehs use the ELN Getrag box, or are they not used by VAG at all? I share your opinion of any so-called "Lubed for Life" assembly's...... First thing I did after buying the car back in May 2015 was to change all the oils and filters,,, inc. gearbox oil. And that was at 135'000 Miles......now has 148'000, so maybe postponed the inevitable !!!!
    Thanks again for your help,
    All the Best, Jim

Look in the wheel well in the boot, ID plate also has gearbox code. From memory, there was no code on the box when I removed mine.

Gazwould, you mentioned that the FRK is a (poor) VW copy of the ELN...but do you know which vehs VAG are using the ELN box in? If they were being used, were very common or scarce?
    Thanks again ,
    All the Best Jim.

They are found in the 3 vehicles mentioned upto a 2002 .

To save money VAG made their own box rather than buy from Getrag .
